Impact of agri-environmental schemes and the emerging biodiversity and carbon credit markets on farm resilience

    Abstract

This review aims to deliver comprehensive, evidence-based insights into how participation in agri-environmental schemes affects farm business incomes and overall resilience across the four AHDB sectors: Beef and Lamb, Pork, Cereals and Oilseeds, and Dairy. The review will cover both public policy mechanisms and emerging private market instruments, offering a holistic view of the current landscape and its implications for UK agriculture.

    Description

This analysis of agricultural policy for primary agricultural products forms part of AHDB’s market
intelligence work, which is funded by the industry and supports AHDB’s wider policy objective of
providing unbiased, evidence-based information to levy payers to support informed decision
making. With agriculture facing unprecedented pressures, the main government environmental schemes
(AES) across the devolved nations, as well as the plethora of private environmental schemes
available to farmers are becoming more important than ever. Overall, they are intended to support
    the Government’s objectives around:
    • improving farm productivity
    • improving water quality, biodiversity and air quality
    • reducing agricultural emissions
    • mitigating the impacts of climate change

    Key objectives are:
Ob1. Identify the key public and private schemes available to farmers in the UK
Ob2. How are the schemes funded? Is it industry/Government/individual companies? Size of
    budget and duration.
Ob3. What are their main methods of promotion?
Ob4. Review any evaluation evidence on the impact or effectiveness of environmental support
    schemes in each country
Ob5. Make recommendations on how AHDB’s support to levy payers might be developed to
ensure information-based decision making is easier for them.
